Sunday, December 7, 1941, they swooped in from the north in waves of torpedo, dive, and fighter planes that were launches from six Japanese carriers. As the planes arrived over Oahu Island, they came upon a large US Naval Base at Pearl Harbor. At 7:58 a.m., the first bombs exploded. The last Japanese plane departed around 9:30 a.m., leaving a mass of destruction and 2,402 American soldiers dead. In the aftermath, the public had many questions.
